When asked to create cover designs for a series of three imagined books, I drew on my familiarity with young adult fantasy to create a series of fairy tale retellings with a dark twist. I used recognizable symbols from each fairy tale to identify the story, and the curvilinear and radial shapes create a sense of unity across the series. The closely cropped and graphic cover illustrations give a contemporary look to the fairy-tale imagery. Elements of the design, such as the limited color palette of red, blue, and gold and the decorative serif font, are inspired by common design conventions within the YA fantasy genre, identifying the books to their core audience and tying the series together.
