Patchwork

Patchwork

This project began with research into the complex topic of interpersonal relationships, with a focus on a queer perspective and non-traditional relationships. This led me to learn about and dwell on such subjects as friendship, chosen and non-biological family, solidarity among marginalized groups, and amatonormativity.

The final product is a patchwork textile piece that represents the web of relationships that form a strong and beautiful community. It is created with a mix of colorful fabrics, new and old, that evoke multigenerational connections. I assembled it with seams that intentionally leave the stitching and fabric edges exposed, showing the process of making and the imperfections that make us human. Drawing on my research about chosen families and networks of mutual care, I wanted to evoke a feeling of warmth and community in the viewer, using bright colors and patterns that might remind them of their own loved ones.
