Perfectionism
At the end of my First Year Writing class, I was asked to write a reflective essay and then remix that reflection into another modality. I wrote about the perfectionism I had struggled with throughout the class, including in this final essay, and chose to remix my reflection in the form of a short autobiographical comic. My perfectionism extends to my artwork as well as my writing, and I referenced this with contrasting styles and level of polish in the comic to show the difference I often feel between my expectations and reality. The comic is in dialogue with the process of drawing itself, using the medium as a visual analogy for the process of drafting and refining a piece of writing (or of art).
This comic appeared in the 2024 issue of Xylem Literary Magazine.
